Ceramics  Paintings  Drawings

I am a relatively new artist to the area
and by profession am a ceramics and
drawing instructor while also working
with international students.  I earned my
B.F.A at Northern Michigan University,
my M.F.A at Michigan State University
and a Masters in Cross-cultural studies
at Gordon Conwell in Boston. I have
had the opportunity to exhibit and sell
my clay sculpture and drawings in a
number of shows and exhibits.  One of
my animal sculptures is in the recent
Lark book "500 Animals". I have also
had the privilege of teaching over five
years at the college level and also in
the International school in Istanbul,
Turkey where I lived from 1988-2000.
While living in Turkey I studied Islamic
art and have been influenced by art
from Eastern cultures.

Since childhood when my father taught
me to draw, I have always loved "line"
and drawing things especially in the
natural world around me.  In high school
I was introduced to ceramics and loved
the feel of clay in my hands. I always
wanted to teach at the college level and
was able to do that until I decided, with
my husband to work with the Kurdish
people in Turkey.  When we arrived
back in America after being away for 12
years, I had so many thoughts and
feelings I wanted to express. Drawing
and working in clay have been such a
joy to me especially in these recent
years.  My interest in Chinese brush
painting came out of my love of "line"
and drawing with ink (pen or brush). I
like to take the Principe's of this art form
and combine them with subject matter
that is meaningful to me, and this is
what I hope to pass on to my students.

At the moment I am working on a project
with a friend of mine in the Peace
Studies program at Notre Dame.  We
are creating art on the subject of
peace-building and conflict- resolution,
especially in the Middle East. This is
stepping out of the box for me and I am
enjoying the challenge. I am excited to
be a part of the art community here in
South Bend and to be challenged by all
the great artists here.
