art classes for adults, including new offerings in
calligraphy, drawing and, for the first time, acrylic painting!
Drawing Classes
Drawing
is the single most important skill to develop for creativity. Strong
drawing skills not only make all other artistic endeavors better and
easier, but are deeply rewarding in their own right. Studio Art Classes
offers a broad range of drawing instruction for students at all skill
levels.
Basic
Training: Drawing

Drawing is the most critical skill
of all the visual arts and a deeply rewarding art in it's own right. Recommended for all beginning
artists, this class will focus on building confidence and basic skills in drawing. Topics include:
learning to see, contour and shape, positive and negative space, tools to help you draw
better, and using value to create form. The class includes plenty of drawing, but also
looking at drawings by master artists, discussions on how drawing is used in the other visual
arts, and how drawing can make your art (and your life) richer.
Introduction to Figure Drawing

Students
will gain a working understanding of the basic elements of drawing the
human form. They will learn practical tools for making the most of
their figure drawing sessions, and guides for future development.
Emphasis is placed on proportion, weight and balance, and
foreshortening. Students will be introduced to the historical and
modern approaches to drawing the nude. This course will also benefit
high school students preparing college entrance portfolios or college
students wanting a head start in life drawing.
Art & Design 101

What
makes a great picture? Great design. How do you make better pictures?
Learn how line and shape are used to lead the viewer, how to use
negative space, and more basic design skills. This class will include
discussions on the elements and principles of design, their use in art
history and contemporary media, and hands-on exercises. This class is
recommended for all persons interested in creating art of any kind, or
anyone wanting a better understanding of the world of design we live in.
Studio Drawing

Students
with a basic understanding of drawing can continue to hone their skills
in this course. Composition and perspective will be covered in greater
depth as well as texture and surface rendering (glass, metal, cloth,
hair). Each week a different topic will be covered, but students will
have time to work on their own individual projects. Self-expression is
encouraged and students will finish several drawings using the medium
of their choice. Color will be introduced. Colored and tinted papers
will be used.
Painting Classes
Painting
brings the world of color to the artist’s studio. From the ancient
watercolor paintings of China, to the rich canvases of the European and
American masters, Studio Art Classes teaches a full spectrum of styles
for all aspiring painters.
Basic
Training: Oil Painting

Designed
for those who have little or no experience in oil painting, this class
will start with how to use brushes, knives, paint, mediums, and canvas.
There will be exercises on applying paint, mixing colors, and value
studies. Students will learn how to paint simple still life objects and
progress to painting a more complex still life. Using a grid method and
proportional scale, students will copy a landscape painting from a
historical or contemporary artist. A drawing class is recommended
before taking a painting class.
Continuing Painting & Drawing

Students
work on their own independent projects, while learning more advanced
painting concepts. Students receive
advice on an individual basis. There is an emphasis on color, composition, and
unity within a drawing or painting. Work from photos or from life using the still
life studio. Students study the work of artists past and present using
slides and DVDs. Critiques are supportive and constructive. The class
encourages students to experiment with new styles and techniques.
People, Places, and Things: Oil
Painting

You
will receive lots of individual attention in this enjoyable, relaxed
class. If you are a beginning painter, Joe will get you off to a good
start through the initial planning, the blocking in and the finish of
your first painting. If you are more experienced, he can
advise
and guide you on color choices, composition, technique, or any other
question you may have about your work. Joe can guide you through still
life, portrait, and landscape. Supplies will be provided to beginners
for the first class. Since the focus is on individual
instruction, class size is limited to 7.
Drawing & Painting

Dynamic Watercolor

In
this comprehensive course, explore the basic techniques and tools
needed to create dynamic watercolor paintings. Learn how to paint
landscapes, skies and water, trees, leaves, brush and foliage.
Technical aspects such as blocking, masking, lifting color, and
blotting will be covered. Texture is given special attention. Beginners
will gain a solid foundation, and intermediate students will expand
their knowledge of more advanced techniques and concepts.
Introduction to Acrylic Painting

Through
guided, step-by-step instruction, you will create a simple yet pleasing
landscapes. You will learn: how to use brushes, about paint
application, basic color mixing, edges, and how to give your work a
three- dimensional look. No drawing experience is required.
Landscape Pastels

Explore
a world of color using soft pastel. Suitable for beginning students and
experienced artists, this class uses the pastel media to its full
potential. Students will receive individual attention and guidance
beneficial to building skills. Composition, color, beginning and
advanced techniques, are a few of the topics covered. Beginning
students have the opportunity to work alongside continuing students in
a warm, welcoming, and supportive atmosphere.

Calligraphy
is the art of beautiful writing. Using the uniquely designed Parallel
broad-edged pen, students will learn the basic letterforms of the
Italic alphabet. This class session is suitable for beginners as well
as the continuing student who wishes to improve. Supplies will be
discussed during the first class session. Pens and cartridges can be
purchased from the instructor.
Calligraphy - Beyond the Basics

class session is designed specifically for the continuing student who
has studied Basic Italic. Using the traditional broad-edged tool of the
scribe known as a “dip” pen and sumi ink, students will work with
advanced letterforms.
